Professor Helen Smith is a faculty member in the Department of English and Related Literature at the University of York. Her roles include former positions such as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Head of Department. She holds a Leverhulme Research Fellowship and leads the Leverhulme Centre for Anthropocene Biodiversity. Her research focuses on Renaissance literature, materiality, book history, feminist theory, and early modern religious conversion.
Education: Graduated from the University of Glasgow and the University of York. Career highlights include teaching at St Andrews and Hertfordshire Universities before returning to York in 2004.
Research interests include women's roles in early modern book production, the cultural significance of material objects, and interdisciplinary studies of early modern science and religion. Notable publications include Grossly Material Things (2012) and Renaissance Paratexts (2011), both award-winning. Current projects explore early modern materiality and the aesthetic appeal of books.
She supervises doctoral research on topics like waste paper, early modern science, and gendered religious narratives. Awards include the Roland H. Bainton and DeLong prizes. External roles include editorial board memberships and external examining at multiple universities.
Teaching contributions include pioneering interdisciplinary modules and receiving a Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Award. She co-directs Thin Ice Press, a letterpress studio, integrating practice-based research into her work.
