Helen Rhee is a Professor of History of Christianity and Religious Studies at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. She holds a B.A. in History from UC Berkeley and an MDiv and Ph.D. from Fuller Theological Seminary. Prior to joining Westmont in 2004, she served as pastor of Hana Church in Buena Park, California, and is an ordained minister of the Free Methodist Church Santa Barbara. Her research focuses on early Christian history, particularly the second through fifth centuries, with specializations in early Christian literature and theology, wealth/poverty dynamics, and Greco-Roman medicine. She teaches all periods of church history and is on sabbatical during 2024-2025.
Dr. Rhee’s work bridges interdisciplinary studies, examining how early Christians engaged with Greco-Roman culture through their theological and ethical frameworks. Her publications include books such as Loving the Poor, Saving the Rich (2012) and Illness, Pain, and Health Care in Early Christianity (2022), which explore themes like Christian identity formation, economic ethics, and healthcare practices in antiquity. Her research highlights the intersections between early Christian thought and Greco-Roman societal structures, offering insights into contemporary theological and ethical discussions.
