Professor Helen Price is a Professor of Parasitology and School Research Director at the School of Life Sciences, Keele University. She holds a BSc (Hons) in Applied Zoology from the University of Leeds and a PhD from Bangor University, focusing on Schistosoma mansoni vaccines. Her research centers on kinetoplastid parasites like Leishmania and Trypanosoma, with a focus on drug targets, nanoparticle therapies, and global health initiatives like the NIHR-funded ECLIPSE program addressing leishmaniasis stigma and patient care in Brazil, Ethiopia, and Sri Lanka. She has led multiple grants, including a £4.6M NIHR project and an MRC-funded study on BBSome trafficking in Leishmania. Her roles include Research Director for the School, Deputy Director of Postgraduate Research, and leadership in academic governance at Keele. She teaches modules on microbiology, pathology, and biomedical science, and collaborates internationally on projects such as drug resistance in Egyptian camels. Her work bridges basic science, clinical research, and global health policy.
Research interests include molecular mechanisms of parasitic infections, drug discovery strategies, and the socio-economic impact of neglected tropical diseases. Key projects involve validating N-myristoyltransferase as a drug target, developing magnetic hyperthermia therapies, and investigating Leishmania’s BBSome complex. She co-leads the ECLIPSE program, aiming to reduce stigma and improve healthcare access for leishmaniasis patients. Her academic leadership roles include overseeing research strategy and ethical review panels at Keele. She is also Honorary Communications Secretary for the British Society for Parasitology and a reviewer for PLoS NTD and Frontiers in Young Minds.
Grants administered include over £9M in funding from NIHR, MRC, and international partners. Her teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including supervision of PhD studentships. She emphasizes community engagement in research, particularly in decolonial approaches to global health collaboration. Her lab focuses on kinetoplastid parasites and translational research to combat neglected diseases.
