Dr Helen Norrie is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture and Associate Head (Students) at the School of Architecture & Design, University of Tasmania. She serves as the Master of Architecture Course Coordinator and leads the Regional Urban Studies Laboratory (RUSL), a collaborative research initiative engaging with local communities and councils on urban design issues in regional towns and cities.
Her research explores the intersection of architecture, urban design, and cultural narratives, with a strong focus on collaborative and community-based practices. Key areas include:
- Urban narratives and the role of museums in city identity
- Integration of Indigenous knowledges in architectural design
- Sustainable and community-driven use of bamboo in architecture (agritecture)
- Medium-density housing and urban densification
- Design pedagogy and the teaching-research nexus
Helen’s recent publications reflect a consistent engagement with regional identity, collaborative methodologies, and cultural sustainability. Her work spans architectural theory, urban design practice, and cross-cultural research, particularly through projects in Vietnam and with the Watti Watti community in Victoria. She has led New Colombo Plan-funded study tours and co-developed a Memorandum of Understanding between UTAS and an Indigenous community—marking a significant step in institutional reconciliation.

Helen is actively involved in professional and community engagement through the Urban Design Advisory Panel (City of Hobart), public forums on housing affordability, and leadership in national architecture conferences. She also contributes to curatorial and editorial work, including entries in The Bloomsbury Global Encyclopedia of Women in Architecture.
