Helen Korving is a Visiting Fellow at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam's Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences, affiliated with the Teacher Academy. Her research focuses on developing technology-based solutions for pain assessment and management in individuals with severe intellectual and motor disabilities. She specializes in integrating machine learning, mobile applications, and physiological sensors to improve healthcare outcomes for vulnerable populations.
- Education: PhD in 2025 (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), titled 'The SID Pain App: Design, development and testing of a pain measurement application.'
Her research interests include pain signaling systems, caregiver-co-designed technologies, and physiological monitoring through wearable devices. She collaborates with experts in AI, biomedical engineering, and clinical care to bridge the gap between technological innovation and practical healthcare needs.
Notable projects include the development of AI-enabled pain monitoring systems using skin conductance sensors embedded in socks and mobile applications for pain signaling. These systems aim to provide objective pain measurement tools for non-verbal patients.
- Grants/Projects: Participated in a 2018-2023 project on 'Social Relations and ICT: Enhancing...' as a researcher.
She has delivered lectures on pain measurement methodologies, caregiver training, and the intersection of technology and disability care. Her work emphasizes ethical design and user-centric approaches in healthcare technology.
