Helen Karlsson is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Linköping University's Department of Health, Medicine and Caring Sciences, within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Her work focuses on environmental pollutants, occupational health risks, and nanomaterial safety. She holds advanced degrees including a Master of Biology (2002), Licentiate (2005), and PhD (2007) in Medicine, followed by a Post Doc (2007–2009) in EU-funded HDLomics research. Since 2017, she has been affiliated with Linköping University in environmental medicine roles.
Her research investigates health impacts of metal particles in manufacturing environments, combining clinical and proteomic analyses to understand adverse effects. Key projects include assessing risks from additive manufacturing (3D printing) nanoparticles and historical lead contamination in Swedish industrial areas. She also studies HDL functionality in pregnancy and athletes, linking lipid biology to cardiovascular health.
Dr. Karlsson contributes to academic networks like the Swedish Academic Consortium on Chemical Safety (SWACCS) and the Swenanosafe expert panel. Her publications span 20+ years, addressing topics from nanoparticle toxicity to biomarker development in occupational and environmental medicine. She teaches in Linköping’s medical program, emphasizing evidence-based practice and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Her work bridges clinical, environmental, and public health domains, aiming to improve preventive measures and treatment strategies for exposure-related illnesses. Current priorities include cross-disciplinary studies on additive manufacturing hazards and legacy pollution’s long-term health consequences.
