Dr. Helen Glew is a Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Westminster, affiliated with the Humanities school. Her research focuses on women's employment, feminism, and women in public life in 19th and 20th century Britain, alongside cultural representations of women in popular media and museums.
Education:
- BA Honours in English Literature & History (University of Lancaster)
- Masters in Historical Research (University of Lancaster, specializing in social/cultural history)
- PhD from University of London's Institute of Historical Research (2010)
Research: Dr. Glew's work examines the marriage bar's impact on married women's employment, cultural narratives around women telephonists, and the decline of typing pools in office culture. Her 2016 monograph Gender, Rhetoric and Regulation analyzed women's work in British public institutions. Current projects explore historical debates on married women's labor and women's occupational associations.
Teaching: She teaches modules on London's history, social/cultural history, and third-year special subjects like women workers in London and technological change in the 1980s/90s.
Affiliations: Member of the History Research Group. Open to supervising doctoral students in her research areas.
