Dr. Helen Bond is a University Professor in the School of Education at Howard University, specializing in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Transformative Teacher Education. She holds a Ph.D. in Human Development from The Ohio State University and has been recognized with the 2020 Alumni Hall of Fame for her international contributions to education and human development. Her research focuses on integrating sustainability, equity, and peace into education systems, particularly in marginalized communities. Dr. Bond co-chairs the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN USA) and serves as faculty liaison to Howard’s Center for African Studies. She has authored influential works on climate justice, violent extremism prevention, and equity in education, including Advancing Climate Action Through Justice-centered Climate Education and Trash Hack Action Learning for Sustainable Development.
Her academic roles include former Director of Howard’s Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Assessment (CETLA). She collaborates with global organizations like UNESCO, UNODC, and the Smithsonian Institution on initiatives such as developing educational tools to counter violent extremism and promote environmental justice. Recent projects include co-authoring reports on U.S. racial disparities in sustainability progress and leading studies on students’ attitudes toward environmental justice through the Smithsonian Science Education Center.
Dr. Bond’s work bridges education and activism, emphasizing how curricula can address systemic inequalities and climate change. Her advocacy extends to international platforms, such as speaking at the UN’s 14th Congress on Crime Prevention and contributing to policy frameworks like the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Awards include the UN Secretary-General’s 2020 Innovation Award for her work on preventing violent extremism through education.
Her research portfolio includes book chapters on Mildred D. Taylor’s literary works and environmental justice, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to linking education with social justice. She actively engages in global education networks, including UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network, to disseminate innovative teaching strategies worldwide.
