Helen B. Marrow is a Professor of Sociology at Tufts University, with affiliations in the Department of Latin American Studies and the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy. Her research focuses on immigration, race and ethnicity, social class, health, and inequality, utilizing qualitative methods and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- PhD and MA in Sociology and Social Policy from Harvard University
- BA in Sociology and Social Policy from Princeton University, summa cum laude
Her work explores Latin American immigrants’ racial identities in the U.S. and Europe, the impact of immigration on the rural American South, and how public institutions address unauthorized immigration. Current projects include analyzing intergroup contact, trust, and civic engagement in Atlanta and Philadelphia with colleagues from political science and social psychology.
Key awards include the Lillian and Joseph Leibner Award for Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring (2019), the American Sociological Association’s Best Dissertation Award (2008), and the Donald W. Light Award for Medical Sociology (2017). She has held leadership roles in the American Sociological Association and served on editorial boards for Contexts and Identities.
At Tufts, she teaches Introduction to Sociology, Qualitative Research Methods, and courses on immigration, race/ethnicity, and Latino sociology. Her recent publications examine emigration aspirations, discrimination in new destinations, and health policy impacts under the Affordable Care Act.
