Heleen Rutjes

Heleen Rutjes is a Postdoctoral Researcher in Human-Technology Interaction at the Eindhoven University of Technology, affiliated with the Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences school. She contributes to the Human Technology Interaction department and collaborates with the Eindhoven MedTech Innovation Center and EAISI Health.

Her research focuses on understanding how people interact with AI-technology, particularly in the health domain. She combines qualitative and quantitative methods to explore explainable AI (XAI), mental models of AI, and intelligent/interactive systems. Her work bridges psychology (BSc) and mathematics (MSc), emphasizing human-centered design.

Heleen’s recent publications highlight her contributions to human-AI collaboration, including studies on marathon running prediction models, health coaching interfaces, and transparency in AI systems. Her research outputs span healthcare, user mental models, and AI-human interaction.

She previously worked as a statistical consultant at CQM and a high school mathematics teacher, focusing on making abstract concepts accessible. Heleen also volunteers as a guest lecturer in primary schools to inspire children, especially girls, to engage critically with AI and promote diversity in technology development.
