Dr. Helana Girgis is an Assistant Professor of Psychology and Director of the Children's Learning Lab (CLL) at Stockton University's School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Her work investigates cognitive development in 3- to 10-year-olds, focusing on how children conceptualize foods, moral judgments, and idea ownership.
- Ph.D., University of Arkansas (2015)
- M.A., University of North Carolina Wilmington
- B.A., University of North Carolina Chapel Hill
The CLL examines universal thinking patterns and cultural influences in children's reasoning, including studies on food origins, health perceptions, contamination understanding, and moral development. Research spans preschool to elementary age groups, with cross-cultural investigations in Egypt.
Recent publications analyze children's categorization strategies, epistemic trust in food information, and food selection predictors. The lab emphasizes community collaboration with schools and families, offering students hands-on experience in experimental design, data analysis, and conference presentations.
Lab positions require psychology majors who have completed Statistical Methods (PSYC 2241), with preference given to those with developmental coursework. Student responsibilities include stimuli creation, participant testing, data coding, and manuscript preparation.
