Heinz Kalinna is an Associate Professor at the Rural Health Research Institute of Charles Sturt University in Orange, NSW, Australia. Previously, he held academic positions at the Institute for Parasitology at Humboldt University (1998–2005) and the University of Melbourne (2006 onwards). He is also a Principal Research Fellow focusing on rural and global health, with a strong track record in parasitology, functional genomics, and metabolic disease research.
- Education: B.Sc. in Biology (1985, Philipps University Marburg), PhD in Parasitology (1990, Philipps University Marburg), D.Sc. in Molecular Studies for Schistosome Interventions (Humboldt University).
His research spans vaccine development for parasitic diseases (particularly schistosomiasis), epigenetic markers for Type 2 diabetes in First Nations populations, and diagnostic tools for periodontitis. He pioneered retroviral transgenesis in schistosomes and contributed to over 50 peer-reviewed publications in journals like Nature Medicine and PloS Pathogens.
Recent publications highlight his focus on functional genomics in helminth research, CRISPR-based diagnostics for Trichomonas tenax, and public health studies on diabetes risk factors in Aboriginal communities. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in health equity and disease prevention.
He served as Editor-in-Chief of Experimental Parasitology (2009–2014) and has organized academic events like the 2024 Orange Research Poster Muster. His collaborations extend across Australia and internationally, with emphasis on neglected tropical diseases and health disparities in marginalized populations.
