Heiner Friedrich

Heiner Friedrich is an Assistant Professor at the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Chemistry Department of Eindhoven University of Technology. He leads the Center for Multiscale Electron Microscopy (CMEM) since 2018 and is a scientific staff member at the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry since 2019. As TU/e executive board member of the Dutch Electron Microscopy Infrastructure (NEMI), he bridges materials chemistry, soft matter science, and advanced microscopy techniques.

• Education: MSc in Physics (TU Dresden, 2001), PhD in Inorganic Chemistry and Quantitative Electron Microscopy (Utrecht University, 2009, cum laude).

Research Focus: Interdisciplinary work at the interface of materials chemistry and soft matter science, emphasizing multiscale structuring to optimize functionality in sustainable materials. Key areas include:

• Functional materials like porous silica for energy storage/catalysis and graphene composites for printed electronics.
• Advanced assembly methods combining bottom-up self-organization with top-down additive manufacturing.
• Quantitative microscopy (QM) innovations in cryo, in-situ, and 3D electron microscopy.

Article Trends show expertise in graphene composites, liquid crystal actuation, and multiscale assembly of silica for applications in soft robotics, energy transport, and food oxidation analysis. Techniques like in-situ microscopy and 3D electron tomography are recurrent themes.
