Heiner Bielefeldt serves as Senior Professor of Human Rights at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg's Institute of Political Science. His career spans academic, institutional, and international human rights work, including six years as UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief (2010-2016) and directorship of Germany's National Human Rights Institution (2003-2009).
His research centers on human rights theory and practice with specialization in freedom of religion or belief, philosophical ethics, and political intellectual history. His interdisciplinary approach bridges legal philosophy, intercultural studies, and historical analysis to examine contested human rights frameworks in contemporary societies.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on religious freedom implementation challenges, human rights foundations, and vulnerable populations.
