Prof. Dr. Heiko Lickert is the Director of the Institute of Diabetes and Regeneration Research (IDR) and holds the W3 Professor and Chair of Beta Cell Biology at the Medical Faculty of Technical University Munich (TUM). His research focuses on regenerative and curative therapies for diabetes, specifically targeting β-cell regeneration or replacement through stem cell-derived approaches. Affiliated institutions include Helmholtz Munich and TUM.
Heiko Lickert earned his PhD in Molecular Embryology from Albert-Ludwigs University and Max-Planck Institute for Immunobiology (Freiburg, Germany). After postdoctoral research at Mount Sinai Hospital (Toronto, Canada), he established his career at Helmholtz Munich, transitioning from Emmy-Noether junior group leader to his current leadership roles.
His research spans beta-cell development, regenerative therapies, and signaling pathways like WNT and GLP-1 receptor mechanisms. Recent work includes stem cell-based islet engineering, metabolic disease modeling, and lineage allocation studies in endoderm development.

Heiko Lickert’s work is funded by the European Research Council (ERC), German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), German Research Foundation (DFG), and partnerships with Eli Lilly. He leads the Helmholtz Diabetes Center (HDC) and participates in consortia like EU ISLET and DZD. His lab studies β-cell regeneration, stem cell differentiation, and disease mechanisms using advanced models like organoids and single-cell transcriptomics.
