Prof. Heiko Lickert is a full professor and chair of β-cell biology at the TUM School of Medicine, leading the Institute of Diabetes and Regeneration Research (IDR) and serving as adjunct professor at the Helmholtz Zentrum München’s Institute of Stem Cell Research. His roles include membership in the Helmholtz Diabetes Center and the TUMCells GMP manufacturing facility. He holds a doctorate from Albert Ludwig University and the Max Planck Institute in Freiburg, with postdoctoral research at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto.
Research focuses on endocrine lineage formation in intestine/pancreas, β-cell development/regeneration, metabolic signaling, and stem cell-based drug screening. Funded by ERC, DFG, BMBF, and EU grants. Key awards include ERC Advanced Grant (2022), m4 Award (2021), and Werner Creutzfeld Prize (2020).
His work bridges basic science and clinical applications, emphasizing β-cell biology’s role in diabetes. Ongoing projects include drug discovery for metabolic disorders and cell therapy strategies. Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams across TUM, Helmholtz, and international institutions.
