Prof. Dr. Heike Knortz is an economic historian currently affiliated with Karlsruhe University of Education (Pädagogische Hochschule Karlsruhe). She has taught at various institutions through EU exchange programs including University of Limerick, University of Huddersfield, Oxford Brookes University, University of Wales College/Newport, and Open University in Newport. Her academic career began with research assistant positions at the University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg (now Helmut Schmidt University).
Dr. Knortz studied at RWTH Aachen University and Philipps University of Marburg. Her scholarly journey reflects a deep commitment to understanding economic historical processes through rigorous archival research and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Her primary research interests focus on the economic history of the 20th century, with particular emphasis on the economic and social history of the Weimar Republic, the history of industrial rationalization (including in the GDR), labor migration to the Federal Republic of Germany, and the era of mercantilism. Through her collaborative project 'Goethe and the Economy' with Germanist PD Dr. Beate Laudenberg, she also explores economic phenomena reflected in literature, creating a unique bridge between economic history and literary studies.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a consistent focus on migration history and economic policy, particularly examining how labor migration intersected with diplomatic relations and economic strategies in post-WWII Europe. Her work challenges conventional narratives about 'guest workers,' demonstrating that recruitment agreements followed traditional foreign policy principles rather than purely labor market needs. She also investigates US efforts to reconstruct Europe as a market based on division of labor, with particular attention to Italian emigration as a solution to unemployment and balance of payments problems.
Dr. Knortz co-edits the prestigious series 'Migration in Economy, History & Society' with Prof. Dr. Margrit Schulte Beerbühl of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. Her media presence is significant, with contributions to Süddeutsche Zeitung, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and appearances on SWR Kultur, ZDFinfo, and Deutschlandfunk Nova.
She has provided scientific consultation for the special exhibition 'Trauma 23 – Germany's Hyperinflation 100 Years Ago' at the House of the Weimar Republic, demonstrating her expertise in economic crises and their societal impacts. Her research continues to shape contemporary understanding of historical economic phenomena and their relevance to current policy debates.
