Heike Klippel

Prof. Dr. Heike Klippel is a Professor of Film History and Theory at the Braunschweig University of Art, where she has been affiliated with the Institute of Media Studies since October 2002. She holds a doctorate in Philosophy from Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt (1996) with a dissertation on 'Memory and Cinema', and a Master's degree from the same institution in German Studies, Philosophy, Theatre, Film and Television Studies (1989). Her academic career includes research positions at Goethe University Frankfurt (1997-2002) and the University of Siegen (1991-1994).

Klippel's research explores feminist film theory, cinematic representations of everyday life, poison discourses in film, memory studies, and temporality in media. She co-edits the journal Women and Film and has led major research projects including a DFG-funded study on poison motifs in film (2013-2015) and an ongoing investigation into 'Everyday Life between Subordination and Resistance: Domestic Workers in Film'. Her work frequently examines Latin American cinema of the 21st century.

Her publications demonstrate sustained engagement with gender politics, temporal structures in cinema, and cultural representations of labor. Recent work (2022-2023) focuses on domestic workers' representation, everyday aesthetics, and gender dynamics in classical Hollywood. Earlier scholarship extensively analyzed poison narratives, memory mechanisms in early cinema, and feminist film theory.

Klippel maintains active research collaborations with scholars from Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, Hochschule Luzern, and Universität Wien. She has organized numerous conferences including 'Precarious Identities' (2015) and 'Toxic Media' (2013), and regularly presents at international forums like the Society for Cinema and Media Studies.

Administratively, she serves on the University Council (since 2023), chairs the Media Studies Examination Board (since 2007), and has held multiple senate committee positions. She led curriculum development for the joint BA/MA Media Studies programs between Braunschweig University of Art and TU Braunschweig during accreditation cycles.
