Prof. Heike Drotbohm is a cultural and social anthropologist specializing in migration studies, transnationalism, and African diaspora dynamics. Her work examines mobility patterns in the Caribbean, Cape Verde, and Brazil, with a focus on family relationships, aid landscapes, and the socio-cultural impacts of migration. She holds a PhD from Philipps University of Marburg (2005) and a habilitation from Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg (2013), both in anthropology. Her research projects include investigations into São Paulo’s migrant aid systems and Cape Verdean transnational family structures.
Key research areas include migration ethics, care practices in activist spaces, and the interplay between legal frameworks and family obligations. Awards include the DGSKA/GAA Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Prize (2022). Her interdisciplinary approach bridges ethnography with critical social theory, addressing contemporary challenges of displacement and belonging.
