Heidi Sherman

Heidi Sherman is an Associate Professor in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Specializing in medieval history and archaeology, she teaches courses on the Vikings, medieval history, and experiential archaeology. She holds a PhD in History from the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities), where she focused on medieval Russia and Viking-age sites.

Her research centers on the material culture of medieval Russia, including flax and linen production, glassmaking, and the Viking-age site of Staraia Ladoga. She co-directs the UW-Green Bay Flax Project with Alison Gates, exploring historical textile technologies and their economic implications.

Dr. Sherman's scholarly work spans medieval trade networks, cultural diffusion in Western Eurasia (500 BC-AD 1000), and interdisciplinary approaches to historical material analysis. Her publications include studies on Kievan Rus leadership, textile economies, and archaeological methodologies.

Scientific honors include the Thomas S. Noonan Award in Russian History, P.E.O. Scholar Award, IREX dissertation fellowship, and multiple research grants for international fieldwork and language studies.
