Professor Heidemarie Winkel serves as Professor of Sociology at Bielefeld University's Faculty of Sociology since June 2015. She maintains an active research profile with particular expertise in postcolonial sociology and Middle Eastern studies.
Her research interests focus on Plural Modernities and Postcolonial Sociology with special attention to Arab societies, Qualitative Methods, Sociology of Knowledge, Culture & Intercultural Communication, Gender Sociology, and Sociology of Religion. Her work examines cultures of understanding and the processes of intercultural communication from a sociological perspective.
Professor Winkel holds significant academic service positions including membership on the Editorial Board of the journal 'Religion, Society and Politics' since 2017, the International Advisory Board of 'Sociology of Islam,' and the advisory board of 'GENDER. Journal for Culture, Gender and Society.' She is also a member of the Center for InterAmerican Studies (CIAS) and the Institute for World Society at Bielefeld University.
Her academic leadership includes previous roles as 6-year board member of the Sociology of Religion section of the German Sociological Association (2013-2019), 4-year board member of the Women's and Gender Research section (2012-2016), and 8-year board member/4-year Chair of the Sociology of Religion Research Network of the European Sociological Association (2012-2020), after which she became an honorary board member. She also served 2 years on the Council of the International Society for the Sociology of Religion.
Professor Winkel has held previous academic positions including Acting Professor at Bielefeld University (2015), Acting Professor for Macrosociology at TU Dresden (2013-2014), and visiting lecturer positions at Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz in Gender Studies (2013-2015). Her academic qualifications include a Diploma in Sociology from the University of Trier (1993), Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Trier (2001), and Habilitation with venia legendi in Sociology from the University of Potsdam (2011).
