Hege Grindem is an Associate Professor at the Department of Sports Medicine, Norwegian School of Sport Sciences (NIH), where she has been affiliated since 2010. She is based at the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center and specializes in sports injury prevention and rehabilitation, with particular expertise in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, youth sports (handball and football), and knee injury management.
Dr. Grindem is a trained physical therapist who also works clinically at the Norwegian Sports Medicine Clinic. She completed her doctoral dissertation in 2014 and has since led and participated in numerous national and international research projects focused on understanding and improving rehabilitation processes and sports injury prevention. She represents Norway in the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery & Arthroscopy Rehabilitation Committee.
Her research spans several key areas: ACL rehabilitation and outcomes, injury prevention in youth sports, knee function assessment, and return-to-sport decision making. She has made significant contributions to international guidelines for the prevention and treatment of knee injuries in sports. Dr. Grindem is particularly known for her work with the Delaware-Oslo ACL Cohort, which has produced influential findings on long-term outcomes following ACL injury and reconstruction.
Dr. Grindem serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy and the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Her publications reveal a strong focus on evidence-based approaches to sports medicine, with particular emphasis on translating research findings into clinical practice.
She supervises five doctoral candidates and several Master's students, demonstrating her commitment to developing the next generation of sports medicine researchers. Her work bridges the gap between clinical practice and research, ensuring that evidence-based approaches inform real-world rehabilitation protocols.
Dr. Grindem is actively involved in interdisciplinary research that examines not just the biomechanical aspects of sports injuries, but also the sociocultural factors that influence injury prevention and rehabilitation outcomes, particularly in youth sports settings.
