Professor Heather Wilson is a Chair in Immunology at the University of Aberdeen, part of the College of Life Sciences and Medicine and School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition. She holds a BSc and PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Aberdeen. Her research focuses on macrophage biology in inflammatory diseases, including atherosclerosis, nephritis, and infection control (e.g., Candida albicans). She leads the Immunity and Infection research programme and teaches immunology courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Her qualifications include a first-class honours BSc (1987) and PhD (1990) in Biochemistry. She has held roles such as Lecturer (2008), Senior Lecturer (2013), and Personal Chair (2019). Her work is funded by the MRC, British Heart Foundation, and Kidney Research UK. Awards include the Carnegie Prize Scholarship for her PhD research on lipid mediators in coronary heart disease.
Research interests include macrophage signaling pathways, wound healing, and the role of physical cues like electric fields in modulating immune responses. She has secured over £5M in grants, including projects investigating PTP1B inhibition in atherosclerosis and diabetic nephropathy.
Teaching responsibilities include coordinating immunology courses (e.g., Fundamentals of Immunology, Honours Immunology). External roles include membership in the Renal Association, British Society of Immunology, and editorial boards for journals like Frontiers in Immunology.
Key achievements include over 80 peer-reviewed publications and mentoring through programs like the Carnegie Trust Future Leaders. She is an ambassador for early-career researcher (ECR) development and serves on committees such as the Foresterhill Biological Safety Committee.
