Dr. Heather Wilkins is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Kansas Medical Center’s School of Medicine. She serves as Assistant Director of the KU Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center’s Mitochondrial Genomics Metabolism and Biomarker Core, focusing on brain energy metabolism’s role in Alzheimer’s pathology. Her work employs human iPSC-derived neurons, glia, and cerebral organoids to model sporadic Alzheimer’s disease.
- Education:
- BS in Microbiology, Kansas State University (2008)
- PhD in Biology, University of Denver (2013)
Her research integrates mitochondrial genomics, neurodegeneration, and biomarker development, with a particular emphasis on APOE4 genotype effects. Recent publications highlight cross-tissue immune profiling, metabolic reprogramming, and liver-brain interactions in Alzheimer’s disease.
Scientific Awards:
- Distinguished Thesis Award (University of Denver, 2013)
Dr. Wilkins participates in the Alzheimer’s Association International Society to Advance Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment and the Alliance of Women Alzheimer’s Researchers. She directs novel biomarker development for the KU Alzheimer’s Disease Center.
