Heather Smyth is an Associate Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Waterloo's Faculty of Arts, specializing in postcolonial and transnational literature studies with a focus on gender, sexuality, and critical race theory. Holding a PhD from the University of Alberta, an MA from the University of Guelph, and a BA from Queen's University, she bridges humanities and social sciences in her research.
Her work emphasizes community-based collaborations with social services and advocacy groups, addressing issues such as homelessness, substance use, and racial oppression. Recent projects include qualitative studies on harm reduction narratives and peer group experiences in sex work communities.
