Heather Shields is an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music, based at Berklee NYC, where she teaches in the Writing and Production for Musical Theater program. She is also a prominent theater producer and general manager with extensive experience on Broadway and in national tours.
Her research and professional interests lie at the intersection of art and commerce in theater, focusing on musical theater creation, immersive performance, and sustainable production models. Shields co-founded Business of Broadway, an initiative dedicated to empowering artists with business knowledge to democratize theater production.
She has been involved in several acclaimed productions, including the Tony Award–winning A Christmas Carol and Bandstand, and serves as producer and general manager for the immersive comedy show BATSU!, with locations in NYC, Chicago, and London. Her upcoming project, Bruce, is a musical about the making of the film Jaws.

As a faculty member and industry leader, Shields mentors emerging theater professionals and advocates for greater financial and creative transparency in the theater industry. She is also a partner at Tom Smedes Productions, offering full-service producing and general management for Broadway, off-Broadway, and touring shows.
She is actively involved in current productions such as My Son’s a Queer (But What Can You Do?) and continues to develop new theatrical works that blend storytelling with innovative business models.
