Dr. Heather Sharkey is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNE COM) and affiliated with the Portland Campus for the Health Sciences. Her career spans clinical practice, research, and medical education. She holds board certifications in Family Medicine and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (NMM/OMM).
Education: B.S. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from Rutgers College (Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellowship recipient), M.D. from UNE COM, and post-doctoral training in Family Medicine and NMM/OMM at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. Recognized for teaching excellence in pediatrics during her residency.
Research and Interests: Early research focused on cell death mechanisms in C. elegans. Currently emphasizes osteopathic clinical skills education, traditional osteopathy techniques (studied under James Jealous, Donald Hankinson, and Gregory Yesensky), and medical education innovation. Teaches Biobasics New Hampshire classes and Osteopathic Clinical Skills at UNE COM since 2012.
Awards: Maine Osteopathic Association’s Young Osteopathic Physician of the Year (2013), Times Record 'Best of the Midcoast' Physician (2022).
Professional Activities: Active in osteopathic training programs and clinical practice. Engaged in hobbies including music appreciation (Portland Symphony Orchestra, Maine State Music Theater), outdoor activities, gardening, and culinary arts.
