Heather Maring is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of English at Arizona State University. Her research focuses on Old English poetry’s intersection with oral traditions, literary forms, and ritual practices. She holds a Ph.D. in English (Literature and Creative Writing) from the University of Missouri-Columbia and an M.F.A. in Poetry from the University of Iowa.
Her expertise spans British Literature, Folklore Studies, and Medieval Literature, with notable contributions to understanding hybrid poetics in Old English verse. Her 2017 book Signs that Sing explores ritual and oral influences in medieval texts, reviewed in prestigious journals like Times Literary Supplement. She has also contributed to UNESCO’s project on oral traditions documentation.
Maring’s publications analyze key texts like the Exeter Book and Dream of the Rood, emphasizing ritual symbolism and intertextual connections. Her creative work includes poetry published in journals like The Southeast Review, blending academic and artistic engagement with medieval themes.
