Heather Love is an Associate Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Waterloo. She holds a PhD from Indiana University, an MA from Queen’s University, and a BA and BMus from the University of Victoria. Her research bridges transatlantic modernist literary studies with interdisciplinary approaches to science, technology, and medicine. Love’s first book, Cybernetic Aesthetics: Modernist Networks of Information and Data (2023), examines modernist literature as a precursor to information science and received the 2025 Gertrude J. Robinson Book Prize. Her current work explores obstetrics narratives and humanities integration in STEM education.
Her professional roles include IEEE TechEthics Global Ambassador and Society Representative to the National Institute for Engineering Ethics. Awards include the 2024 IEEE Brian M. O’Connell Award and 2023 British Society for Literature and Science Book Prize nomination. Grants include the SSHRC-funded ‘Rhetoric of Techno-Mediated Maternity’ and the University of Waterloo’s NEATO project.
Research interests span cybernetics, medical humanities, and ethics in engineering education. Recent projects analyze early 20th-century obstetrics discourses and collaborate on interdisciplinary ethics training initiatives. She advocates for humanities perspectives in STEM contexts, leading efforts to embed ethical frameworks in engineering curricula.
Her articles address topics like eugenics in McClure’s Magazine, cybernetic modernism, and feminist modernist drama. Key themes include socio-technical systems, literary networks, and ethical tech innovation. She co-leads grants focused on responsible innovation and ethical pedagogy, emphasizing cross-sector collaboration across academia, industry, and policy.
