Heather J. Hoag is a Professor of History at the University of San Francisco and Director of Student Experience & Community Engagement in the Honors College. She holds a PhD in History from Boston University (2003). Her research focuses on African environmental history, river valuation, hydropower development, and marine fisheries in West Africa. She has contributed to the International Water History Association's journal Water History as editor-in-chief (2008-2017). At USF, she actively supports African Studies, Environmental Studies, and International Studies programs.
- Education: PhD in History from Boston University (2003)
Her research explores historical transformations in African river ecosystems and their socio-economic impacts. Current work investigates West African marine fisheries through an environmental lens. She teaches courses on African colonial history, South African history, and food history.
