Heather Hamill is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Oxford and Dean of St Cross College. Her research focuses on trust and reputation dynamics in high-risk environments, including criminal organizations, informal justice systems, and pharmaceutical supply chains in sub-Saharan Africa. She has conducted extensive fieldwork on taxi driver trust mechanisms, paramilitary punishment systems in Belfast, and the proliferation of sub-standard medicines.
Hamill's work combines sociological theory with empirical research, often exploring how marginalized groups navigate trust challenges. She has authored seminal books such as *The Hoods: Crime and Punishment in Belfast* (2011) and *Streetwise: How Taxi Drivers Establish Their Customers’ Trustworthiness* (2005), co-authored with Diego Gambetta. Her research has been supported by major grants from the Russell Sage Foundation, ESRC, Nuffield Foundation, and Wellcome Trust.
Recent research emphasizes global health governance, particularly addressing low-quality medicines in Africa through interdisciplinary collaboration. She has held a British Academy Postdoctoral Research Fellowship and contributed to policy initiatives like the Oxford Statement on medical product quality assurance.
Her academic service includes leadership roles at St Cross College and editorial work for criminology journals. Current projects investigate pharmaceutical governance gaps and trust-building mechanisms in volatile environments.
