Heather Flores is a Research Fellow at Monash University's School of Biological Sciences, focusing on using Wolbachia for biocontrol of arboviruses in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Her work examines Wolbachia strain efficacy, post-release evolution, and nuclear-mitochondrial genome interactions impacting mosquito fitness and Wolbachia stability. She holds a PhD in Genetics & Development from Cornell University (2013).
- Education: PhD in Genetics & Development, Cornell University (2013)
Key research interests include vector-borne disease mitigation, microbial symbiosis dynamics, and genomic stability. Her projects span NHMRC-funded studies on nuclear-mitochondrial interactions (2020–2024) and ARC-supported endosymbiont-host fitness research (2025–2028). She has co-invented patents related to Wolbachia-based mosquito control technologies.
Recent publications highlight Wolbachia's role in restricting dengue virus replication, optimizing field release logistics, and tracking evolutionary stability in mosquito populations. Flores collaborates internationally on vector control strategies and contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals addressing global health challenges.
