Heath Carpenter is an Associate Professor in the Department of English Language & Literature at Harding University. He serves as Assistant Dean of Academic Innovation and Collaboration and Director of the Integrative Studies Degree Program. His academic background includes a Ph.D. focusing on contemporary Southern identity and culture. Dr. Carpenter teaches courses in Southern Literature, African American Literature, Film as Literature, and interdisciplinary studies. He leads annual cultural studies trips to New York City and Washington, D.C., and has taught at Harding's Florence, Italy campus. His administrative roles involve advising, program administration, and supervising capstone projects in Interdisciplinary Studies.
Research interests span Southern cultural identity, interdisciplinary approaches to literature and the arts, and the intersection of faith with literary themes. His book The Philosopher King: T Bone Burnett and the Ethic of a Southern Renaissance explores music, culture, and ethical narratives. He also teaches at the Honors Symposium during summer sessions.
Dr. Carpenter’s work emphasizes purpose-driven education through personalized academic pathways. His Interdisciplinary Studies program allows students to design tailored curricula with concentrations in career-focused areas, supported by coursework in vocation and calling.
