معرفی
Dr. Hayley Barnes is an Adjunct Lecturer at the School of Translational Medicine and the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health at Monash University. She also serves as a Respiratory and Sleep Physician at the Alfred Hospital, combining clinical practice with academic research. Her work is deeply integrated with public health and occupational medicine, particularly in the context of lung diseases caused by environmental and occupational exposures.
Her research interests focus on interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and end-stage lung diseases, with a strong emphasis on silicosis associated with the artificial stone benchtop industry. She is actively involved in improving diagnostic methods, understanding disease mechanisms, and developing targeted treatments. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to good health and well-being, and responsible consumption and production.
The trend in her recent publications reveals a growing integration of artificial intelligence in radiology to detect early biomarkers of silicosis, alongside robust clinical and epidemiological studies. Her work spans occupational health, diagnostic accuracy, autoimmune responses in lung disease, and multidisciplinary cancer care, demonstrating a broad yet focused impact in respiratory medicine.
Dr. Barnes holds editorial roles in high-impact journals including the Cochrane Airways Group, PaPas Group, and BMC Pulmonary Medicine, underscoring her leadership in evidence-based respiratory care. She is the primary investigator on several funded research projects, including those supported by the NHMRC and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, and is actively mentoring PhD students.
She leads key research initiatives such as "Emerging techniques for earlier diagnosis of artificial stone silicosis" and "Discovering radiological biomarkers using AI", working in collaboration with national and international experts. These projects are conducted through interdisciplinary teams involving pulmonologists, radiologists, epidemiologists, and data scientists, reflecting a comprehensive approach to tackling complex respiratory diseases.
