Dr. Hayah Katz serves as a Senior Lecturer of Iron Age Archaeology at Kinneret College on the Sea of Galilee's Department of Land of Israel Studies, with additional teaching responsibilities in the Department of History, Philosophy and Judaic Studies at The Open University of Israel.
Dr. Katz earned her M.A. in archaeology from Tel Aviv University and completed her Ph.D. in archaeology at Bar-Ilan University under Zev Safrai and Shmuel Vargon, establishing her scholarly foundation in ancient Near Eastern studies.
Her research program integrates field archaeology with theoretical inquiry, focusing on settlement dynamics in Upper Galilee during the first millennium B.C.E. through directorship of the Meron Ridges Project and Tel Rosh excavations. She has pioneered scholarship on the history of Israeli archaeology since the 1920s, founding the Zev Vilnay Chair to advance this field. As a ceramics specialist, she serves as associate director for pottery analysis at Tel 'Eton, contributing significantly to dating methodologies in Iron Age contexts. Dr. Katz uniquely examines the evolving relationship between Religious Zionist communities and archaeological practice, documenting how engagement transformed dramatically after 1967.
As an Orthodox Jewish scholar, she navigates the tensions between academic biblical criticism and religious faith with intellectual integrity, advocating for Berl Katznelson's principle of 'Better Perplexed than Whitewashed' in scholarly work.
