Hartmut Schick is a Professor of Musicology at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU), where he has held the Chair of Musicology since January 2001. He serves as Director of the Institute of Musicology and Spokesperson for the Institute. Additionally, he is a Member of the Management Board of the Department of Fine Arts and has served on the Academic Senate of LMU Munich since October 2023. From 2019 to 2021, he was Dean of the Faculty of History and Art History.
His academic journey began with studies in musicology, history, and philosophy at the University of Tübingen and University of Heidelberg from 1981-1989. He earned his doctorate in March 1989 under Ludwig Finscher with a dissertation titled "Studies on Dvořák's String Quartets." He completed his habilitation in July 1996 with work on "Musical Unity in the Italian Madrigal from Rore to Monteverdi." Before joining LMU permanently, he worked as a research assistant at the University of Tübingen (1989-1996), served as editor of Denkmäler der Musik in Baden-Württemberg (until 1988), and taught at several institutions including the University of Bern.
Professor Schick's research focuses on Italian music of the 16th and early 17th centuries, the music of Viennese Classicism, 19th century music, classical modernism, regional music research, and music editing. His scholarly work demonstrates a particular interest in Dvořák, Richard Strauss, and the relationship between text and music in vocal compositions. He has made significant contributions to the understanding of madrigal composition, symphonic form, and the reception of musical works throughout history.
His extensive publication record shows a consistent engagement with both historical musicology and contemporary analytical approaches. Schick has published numerous articles analyzing specific composers and works while also contributing to broader theoretical discussions about musical form, representation, and reception. His work bridges historical scholarship with contemporary analytical perspectives, particularly in examining how music reflects and shapes cultural contexts.
Among his notable achievements is being awarded the Schubart Literature Prize of the City of Aalen in 2001 for his critical edition of the complete songs of Christian Fr. D. Schubart in the Monuments of Music in Baden-Württemberg.
Professor Schick serves as Principal Investigator of the International Doctoral Program MIMESIS at LMU and the International Doctoral Program of the Elite Network Bavaria "Philology: Practices of Premodern Cultures, Global Perspectives, and Future Concepts" (since 2021). Since February 2011, he has been the project director of the Academy's long-term project "Critical Edition of the Works of Richard Strauss" and head of the Richard Strauss Complete Edition Research Center at LMU Munich. He also holds leadership positions in several scholarly organizations including Chairman of the Society for Bavarian Music History and membership on various editorial boards and committees related to musicological research.
As Head of the Academy Project "Critical Edition of the Works of Richard Strauss," Professor Schick leads a significant research center dedicated to producing authoritative editions of Strauss's compositions. His work connects academic research with practical musicological applications through collaborations with the Richard Strauss Institute Garmisch-Partenkirchen and major music publishers.
