Harsharan Singh, MD, is a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He is also a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center with clinical and research focus on polyomavirus infections in transplant patients.
His research specialization centers on transplantation medicine and virology, particularly polyomavirus nephropathy in kidney allograft recipients. Dr. Singh pioneered the development of “Haufen testing,” a non-invasive diagnostic technique that eliminates the need for invasive biopsies in diagnosing polyomavirus nephropathy. This groundbreaking work has garnered multi-center international validation with funding from Astellas Pharma and potential global clinical impact.
Analysis of his publication history reveals consistent contributions to
- Transplant virology diagnostics
- Polyomavirus pathogenesis
- Renal pathology classification systems
- Clinical management of post-transplant infections
Dr. Singh serves as lead investigator for multi-center prospective studies involving US, Canadian, and European centers. Current research funding is under review with the European Renal Association / European Dialysis and Transplantation Association (ERA-EDTA).
His clinical practice and translational research bridge laboratory science with direct patient care applications, focusing on improving outcomes for kidney transplant recipients through innovative diagnostic approaches.
