Harry Lunabba serves as University Lecturer and University Researcher at the Swedish School of Social Science, University of Helsinki, where he supervises doctoral candidates in the Social Sciences programme and conducts research on gender, childhood, and welfare systems. His work bridges academic theory and practical social interventions across Nordic contexts.
Research focuses critically on Boyhood and Vulnerable Masculinities within institutional settings, examining how gender norms intersect with power dynamics in schools and youth work. Lunabba investigates ethical tensions between children's participation rights and protection frameworks, while analyzing social work's role in gatekeeping professional access and addressing boys' mental health.
His publication trajectory reveals evolving expertise from foundational doctoral work on adult-boys relationships (2013) to current analyses of ethical dilemmas in child protection (2024) and social work education structures. Recurring themes include institutional power, gendered vulnerability, and participatory ethics.
Awarded the Statsrådet Mauritz Hallbergs pris in 2014, Lunabba currently leads:
- CHILD-SOCNET (2024-2025), Ministry of Social Affairs and Health-funded research on child social networks
- Promoting and Maintaining Human Sustainability in Institutional Living (2019-present), investigating sustainable care practices
As doctoral supervisor, he mentors emerging scholars while actively translating research through 30+ professional engagements including conference organization (e.g., Nuancing Young Masculinities, 2018), public talks on #MeToo's implications for men, and media commentary on boys' mental health and social work education reforms.
