California Institute of Technology (Caltech)معرفی
Harry B. Gray is the Arnold O. Beckman Professor of Chemistry and Founding Director of the Beckman Institute at the California Institute of Technology. With a career spanning over six decades, he has held visiting professorships at prestigious institutions including Oxford University, University of Hong Kong, and Caltech, where he has been since 1966. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. from Northwestern University and numerous honorary doctorates from global universities.
Education:
- B.S., Western Kentucky College (1957)
- Ph.D., Northwestern University (1960)
- Multiple Honorary Doctorates (D.Sc.h.c., D.L.h.c., Fil.dr.h.c., Laurea h.c.)
Gray's research focuses on bioinorganic electron transfer chemistry, metal-oxo bonding, and redox-active ligands. He pioneered the discovery of the 'oxo wall' in transition metals and 'hole hopping' mechanisms in proteins, which protect cells from oxidative damage. His current work explores metal-ion interactions with SARS-CoV-2's Nsp1 protein to identify novel antiviral strategies.
His publications span advanced spectroscopy methods (Moessbauer, EPR, Resonance Raman), metalloprotein engineering (cytochrome P450, azurin, laccase), and catalytic systems. Key themes include electron tunneling dynamics, tyrosine/tryptophan chain functions, and ligand design for redox-active complexes.
Scientific Awards & Honors:
- National Medal of Science (1986)
- Wolf Prize (2004)
- Welch Award (2009)
- Benjamin Franklin Medal (2004)
- Priestley Medal (1991)
- 22 Honorary Doctorates
Gray has mentored hundreds of students and postdocs, including over 100 women, and six university presidents. His teaching includes advanced inorganic chemistry (Ch 153 abc) and ligand field theory tutorials (Ch 213 abc), emphasizing spectroscopy and theoretical approaches.
