Harrison Hyung Min Kim

Harrison Hyung Min Kim is a Professor in the Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), holding concurrent appointments at the Beckman Institute, Carle Illinois College of Medicine, and Computational Science and Engineering Program. He currently serves as Program Director for Engineering Design and Systems Engineering at the National Science Foundation (NSF).

His educational background includes a B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from KAIST and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan under Panos Papalambros (NAE Member), followed by postdoctoral work at Northwestern University with Wei Chen (NAE Member).

Kim's research centers on systems design engineering with focus areas in AI-based sustainable product design, energy systems engineering, life cycle analysis, and multidisciplinary optimization. His work applies to automotive, consumer electronics, and national security systems, funded by NSF, DOE, Caterpillar, and Hyundai. Recent publications (2021-2025) demonstrate a strong shift toward AI-driven analysis of online reviews for product design, pandemic-responsive design strategies, and circular economy implementation.
