Associate Professor Harriot Beazley is a distinguished Human Geographer at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC), Queensland, Australia, serving as a Leadership Team member of the UniSC Indigenous and Transcultural Research Centre and Discipline Leader of the Global Sustainable Development Major in the School of Law and Society. With over 30 years of professional experience working on international development projects in Southeast Asia (particularly Indonesia) and the Pacific, her expertise spans child protection, street children's rights, community participation, and rights-based approaches to development.
Her academic credentials include a PhD from the Australian National University (ANU) and a BA (Hons) from London. Professor Beazley has established herself as a leading scholar in children's geographies through her extensive fieldwork in Indonesia, particularly in Yogyakarta, where she has documented the lived experiences of street-connected children and youth.
Her research interests focus on vulnerable populations of children and youth, with particular emphasis on street and working children in Indonesia, children's participation in decision-making, children's citizenship, child labor in Southeast Asia, children and migration, youth subcultures, and rights-based participatory research. Her work consistently centers on children's agency, resistance strategies, and the construction of identity within contexts of social exclusion and marginalization.
Analysis of her publication history reveals a clear scholarly trajectory: early works examined street children's subcultures and spatial resistance in Indonesian urban settings, while more recent publications have expanded to address migration issues, particularly the experiences of 'left behind' children and young women migrating for work in Southeast Asia. Her research demonstrates consistent theoretical engagement with subcultural theory, identity formation, and spatial politics as they relate to children's lived experiences.
Professor Beazley serves as Co-Editor for the prestigious Routledge journal Children's Geographies and is an active member of the Consortium for Street Children Expert Research Forum in London. Her research has been supported by significant grants from organizations including the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, reflecting the international recognition of her work's policy relevance.
As an educator, she teaches Introduction to Human Geography, Development Studies, Landscapes, Place and People, and Historical Geographies, while supervising PhD students working on research projects across Australia, Mexico, Vanuatu, South Africa, and Japan. Her supervisory expertise spans social justice, gender studies, disaster management, and community-based interventions in international development contexts.
