Professor Haroun Mahgerefteh serves as Professor of Chemical Engineering at University College London and was elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng) in 2025. He leads multinational research initiatives in carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) with direct impact on global net-zero emission strategies.
His research spans critical domains including carbon capture infrastructure safety, pipeline rupture modeling, and hazardous material transport systems. Notably, he developed PipeTech software—the industry-standard tool adopted worldwide for assessing safety risks across thousands of kilometers of pressurized CO₂ pipelines, directly influencing regulatory frameworks and engineering practices in energy transition technologies.
Professor Mahgerefteh's scientific contributions have been recognized through prestigious accolades:
- Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng)
- IChemE EuroChem Highly Commended Prize for PipeTech software
- Multiple awards from Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE)
- European Union Mission Innovation honors
- Royal Society distinctions
As active member of the UK Carbon Capture and Storage Research Council, his commissioned reports and safety methodologies continue driving CCUS deployment while maintaining leadership in engineering safety standards development for hazardous material transportation systems globally.
