Harold van Rijen is a Professor of Medical Sciences at Utrecht University and serves as Director of Education for the Master Biomedical Sciences program within the Faculty of Medicine (UMC Utrecht). Based at the Hugo R. Kruyt Building in Utrecht, he holds dual research focuses bridging educational innovation and cardiac physiology while maintaining active roles in international academic committees.
His medical education research pioneers blended learning methodologies, optimizing combinations of face-to-face instruction and educational technology to enhance student satisfaction, knowledge retention, and skill development. In cardiac electrophysiology, he investigates fundamental arrhythmia mechanisms—particularly slow impulse conduction disorders—analyzing cell-cell coupling dynamics, myocardial excitability thresholds, and fibrotic tissue impacts on electrical propagation.
