Harold Metcalf is a Distinguished Teaching Professor at Stony Brook University's Department of Physics and Astronomy. His career spans over five decades, with significant contributions to atomic and optical physics. He has held visiting positions at institutions including the University of Innsbruck, Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris, and the University of Konstanz. Metcalf received his B.S. from MIT (1962) and Ph.D. from Brown University (1967). Research focuses on experimental atomic and optical physics, with notable work in quantum optics and laser physics. He has advised numerous graduate students and postdocs, including recent Ph.D. graduates like Yifan Fang and Xiaoyang Liu. Awards include the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship and a visiting Debye Professorship in the Netherlands. The Metcalf Research Group collaborates internationally, with projects spanning atomic physics and quantum technologies. He also leads the Laser Teaching Center at Stony Brook, fostering undergraduate engagement.
