Dr. Harmit Malik serves as Professor and Associate Director of the Basic Sciences Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, where he also holds membership in the Pathogen-Associated Malignancies Integrated Research Center (PAM IRC). His internationally recognized work explores evolutionary arms races between host genomes and pathogens.
Dr. Malik's educational background includes:
- PhD in Biology from the University of Rochester (1999)
- BTech in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (1993)
His research centers on genetic conflict mechanisms driving evolutionary change, with particular focus on centromere evolution, ancient viral interactions in primate genomes, and mobile genetic elements in Drosophila. The Malik Lab pioneered approaches to reconstruct extinct retroviruses like PtERV, revealing how human TRIM5alpha protein evolution created vulnerability to HIV while providing protection against ancient viral threats. This work demonstrates how 8% of the human genome comprises viral fossils from evolutionary conflicts spanning millions of years.
Dr. Malik's major recognition includes:
- Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator
As leader of the Malik Lab, he directs interdisciplinary research combining computational genomics, molecular biology, and evolutionary analysis to decode host-pathogen conflicts. His team's findings on rapidly evolving proteins at virus-host interfaces have overturned textbook models of viral infection mechanisms, with implications for developing novel antiviral therapies targeting evolutionary vulnerabilities.
