Hao Huang holds the Bessie and Cecil Frankel Endowed Chair in Music at Scripps College. A concert pianist and interdisciplinary scholar, his work spans music performance, ethnomusicology, American studies, and digital humanities, with recent focus on anti-Asian violence commemoration projects.
Huang's research examines music in cultural contexts including Hakka, Hawaiian, and Tewa Pueblo traditions, jazz/race relations, and music sustainability. His recent work addresses environmental connections through Balinese subak systems and pandemic impacts.
As director of several initiatives, Huang has produced multimedia projects like 'Blood on Gold Mountain' (podcast on the 1871 LA Chinatown massacre) and 'American Dreams/Asian Nightmares' performances. He received NEA grants, Fulbright awards, and residencies across four continents.
