معرفی
Hans-Walter Rix is the Director of the Department of Galaxies and Cosmology at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) since 1999 and an Honorary Professor at Heidelberg University since 2000. His research focuses on galaxy formation and evolution, combining observations of distant galaxies with detailed studies of the Milky Way to unravel cosmic structure and dynamics.
Education:
- PhD in Astronomy, University of Arizona (1991)
- Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität München (1984–1986)
- Albert-Ludwig-Universität Freiburg (1983–1984)
His work leverages large-scale spectroscopic and imaging surveys like SDSS, Pan-STARRS1, Gaia, and JWST to investigate galaxy structure, star formation history, and the chemical evolution of the Milky Way. He has contributed to understanding the Tully-Fisher relation, galaxy disk evolution, and the role of binary star systems in cosmic phenomena.
Scientific Awards & Memberships:
- ERC Advanced Grant (2013–2018)
- Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (1996–1998)
- Hubble Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1991–1994)
- Fulbright Scholarship (1986–1988)
- German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina) member
- European Academy of Sciences and Arts member
Rix has supervised PhD students like Johanna Müller-Horn and Luzian Seeburger, while mentoring postdocs in projects involving Gaia, SDSS-V, and gravitational lensing. He has taught courses at Heidelberg University on Cosmology and Galactic Astronomy.
