Fabian Walter

Fabian Walter is a Research Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg, Germany, specializing in the Galaxies and Cosmology department. He also holds positions as an Adjunct Associate Astronomer at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) and a Visiting Associate in Astronomy at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). His research focuses on the interstellar medium in galaxies across cosmic time.

Walter's research interests span high-redshift and low-redshift astronomy. His work includes studying molecular gas and dust in the first quasars during the Epoch of Reionization, observing the interstellar medium of distant galaxies, and spatially resolving atomic and molecular gas phases in galaxies. He employs advanced observational techniques using (sub)millimeter and radio facilities.

Walter serves as Project Scientist for the Deep Synoptic Array (DSA-2000) and has been supported by two ERC grants (Cosmic_Dawn and Cosmic_Gas). He chairs the MPIA PhD Advisory Committee and serves as Scientific Editor at the AAS Journals.

• LADUMA, KINGFISH, SINGS, and MHONGOOSE as Co-I

Walter serves on numerous Time Allocation Committees including IRAM NOEMA/PdBI (chair), 30m telescope (chair), MeerKAT Review Panel, EVLA, GBT, and MPIA Strategic TAC. He is also active in facility development as a member of the IRAM Scientific Advisory Committee, NRAO ngVLA Science Advisory Committee, and the European MIRI consortium for JWST.
