Hans-Peter Marshall is Associate Professor in the Department of Geosciences at Boise State University, where he leads the Cryosphere Geophysics and Remote Sensing Group. His research focuses on microwave radar applications for snow and ice remote sensing, snow stability modeling, and avalanche detection.
His research develops novel remote sensing techniques including microwave radar, lidar, and ground-penetrating radar to quantify snow properties and processes. Key research areas include: improving snow water equivalent retrievals using L-band InSAR, developing autonomous monitoring systems for ice sheet processes, and advancing NASA's SnowEx campaign through multi-sensor validation approaches.
Professor Marshall's field programs span diverse cryospheric environments including Arctic tundra, boreal forests, mountain glaciers, and the Greenland Ice Sheet. His work addresses fundamental challenges in measuring spatial variability of snow properties and validating satellite-based snow products.
