Hans Löfsten is a Full Professor at Chalmers University of Technology's Department of Technology Management and Economics, part of the School of Business, Economics and Society. He holds roles as Associate Editor of the Journal of Technology Transfer and has served as Head of Department and Head of Division at Chalmers. Löfsten earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Gothenburg in 1992, later becoming an Associate Professor (1999) and Full Professor (2007).
His research focuses on technology management, entrepreneurship, and innovation systems, with a particular emphasis on Science Parks, new technology-based firms, and business model design. Key areas include resource allocation for tech firms, policy frameworks for firm scaling, and the role of stakeholder networks in innovation ecosystems. Löfsten has supervised ten doctoral students and authored two textbooks in industrial management.
Recent work explores Science Park diversity, business model impacts on firm growth, and knowledge ecosystems around large-scale research infrastructure like MAX IV and ESS. His studies frequently examine empirical cohorts of tech firms to analyze growth patterns, resource mobilization, and policy effectiveness. Collaborations extend to institutes like IMIT and GRI, addressing challenges in technology transfer and regional development.
Key projects include investigating entrepreneurial milieus around major research facilities and analyzing initial business model strategies across Sweden and Finland. His work combines quantitative analyses with institutional theory and network perspectives.
